Breaking News: Meta Takes on Twitter with a New Microblogging Platform
Greetings Vertex Viewers,
Meta is gearing up to enter the microblogging sphere, stepping into the ring to compete with Twitter. The social media giant has announced the development of a new standalone, text-based application, set to launch this summer. Codenamed P92 or Barcelona, this new venture is aimed at becoming the next major player in the world of microblogging.
Integration and Decentralization
This new Meta application promises a unique user experience, partially integrating with Instagram while preserving its own identity. Users will retain their Instagram handles and verification, and their Instagram followers will be notified to follow them on this yet-to-be-named platform.
Notably, the platform is set to be decentralized and built on the ActivityPub protocol, ensuring interoperability with Mastodon. This promises a new realm of microblogging that champions freedom and flexibility for users.
Targeting High-Profile Figures
For an early impact, Meta plans to offer early access to high-profile public figures, including athletes, actors, producers, and comedians. While acknowledging that Mastodon, Bluesky, and other apps have had a head start, Meta leverages its access to billions of users through its suite of apps, including Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger, to gain a significant edge.
Community Guidelines and Safety Measures
Modeled after Instagram's community guidelines, the new platform promises a safe and inclusive environment for all users. Plus, users can log in using their Instagram credentials, with blocks and hidden words carrying over from Instagram. Robust safety features will be embedded from the start, including two-factor authentication and spam reporting, aiming to create a secure and comfortable space for everyone.
Content Creation and Sharing
With a generous 500-character limit for text posts and the ability to upload photos, links, and videos up to five minutes long, users will have plenty of opportunities for expression. The platform will feature a familiar feed where users can like, reply, or repost content, maintaining the social media interaction norms we have all come to know.
As we look forward to Meta's latest offering, we would love for you to join us in this journey. Sign up for updates and share this newsletter with others who might be excited about this upcoming platform.
Stay tuned for more news and developments!
